About Dr. Mazidah binti Abdul Rasid

Biographical Sketch:

Dr. Mazidah completed her undergraduate training as a Doctor in 1988 in UKM. She did her Medical Officer training in HUSM, General Hospital Kota Bharu and Health Clinic Bachok before joining as a trainee lecturer in Paediatric Department in HUSM. During this period, she gained experiences in managing paediatric cases and had triggered her interest in pursuing 4-year postgraduate paediatric training (Master of Paediatric) in USM from 1993 till 1996. She was then appointed as the Paediatrician and Lecturer after she graduated her Master programme. Since then she was given the responsibilities of supervising and teaching the postgraduate and undergraduate students. Most of the service works are covering both the paediatric and neonatology cases. She was also involved in numerous researches in children especially in respiratory diseases. In 1998, she was awarded Heinz Fellowship by the Royal College of Paediatric and Child Health to do her subspecialty training in respiratory in Royal Liverpool Children NHS Trust Alder Hey Hospital at Liverpool. In this unit, she had been managing children with asthma, chronic lung disease and allergic diseases. In 2000, she was awarded the Traveling Scholarship in “Safe Communities” given by WHO-SIDA. This scholarship has given her a chance to work and give great experience in managing sick children in undeveloped countries in Bangladesh and India. Following that she concentrated on managing neonatal cases in Intensive Care Unit in HUSM. She was also selected to be the member in setting the clinical guidelines “Pneumonia and Respiratory Infection in children” for the Ministry of Health Malaysia. In 2002, she was given the ASCHES fellowship to do her subspecialty training in respiratory unit at Sydney Children Hospital, Sydney, Australia. She had an extensive training and clinical experience in all aspect of paediatric respiratory diseases. She was involved in the clinical and laboratory work such as bronchoscopy, skin allergy test and lung function lab for children. In addition to this, she completed training in Sleep Unit at Sydney’s Children Hospital which she spent her time in the sleep study lab interpreting polysomnography of sleep studies and managing children with non ventilatory support. She had the sleep training course from the Sleep Medicine and Technology Unit in Sydney University. She returned to join the Paediatric department in HUSM and was then promoted to Associate Professor in 2003.
